Have you ever received annoying political endorsement calls on your cell phone? If you have and want to complain about these callers to get them to stop, chances are you’ll be unsuccessful. The reason is because these political calls are exempt from the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNCR). Therefore, under most circumstances you won’t really be able to file a compliant with the NDNCR, even if it is your cell phone that is being called.
Of course, you may think that since the political endorsement calls are being made to your cell phone number, which is considered private, and you are being charged for these calls, that you should have more authority and be able to file a compliant, just as you would if you were being hassled by a regular telemarketer. Unfortunately, if the political call is legitimate, you won’t be so lucky.
However, although you may not be able to complain to the NDNCR, there are other ways you can stop the annoying political endorsement calls. The first step is to politely tell the person calling you to place you on their organizations do not call list. If it is a pre-recorded message, on the other hand, here is what you can try:
1) Listen to the message and see if a number is provided that you can call. Call this number and either tell the person who answers to place you on their do not call list, or leave this message on the answering machine.
2) If you have Caller ID, do a reverse phone lookup to see if you can find out more information on the number.
3) If you continue receiving calls from the same number, don’t answer the call. If the call is going to your voice mail, quickly answer and hang up the phone to avoid a bigger charge.
4) Ask your phone provider to block the number from your phone
5) Turn your phone off whenever it is not necessary to have it on.
6) If the pre-recorded calls are very persistent, try making a complaint with the NDNCR and your phone company, as this could be a case of caller ID spoofing. Make a record of the number of calls you receive from the number, and write down the times and dates you received these calls to include in your complaint.
Finally, the best way to avoid receiving calls from telemarketers, charities, political endorsement calls, etc. is to never give out your cell phone number to anyone other than close friends or family members, and make sure your cell phone provider doesn’t sell your number to third parties.
Also, remember that you can find out who an annoying caller is here and see if other people have had any luck in stopping political endorsement calls to their cell phones.
